Who Am I?
Hello, my name is Kerry and I am a mixed media/ textile artist. I've been drawing and sewing since I was 9 years old. I received a Visual Arts diploma in Textiles in 1994 and earned a combined B.A and B.Ed. degrees, majoring in Art Education in 2014. I've taught all levels of education, including adults. I'm also a mom of 2 awesome grown kids and the wife of my best friend whose crazier than I am - a perfect fit!
What Do I Do?
I alter/create graphics, make applique designs, junk journals, mental health journals, and the editor/creator of Litterbrush magazine for paper artists. And when I'm not busy with that I create videos for my YouTube channel and online courses. I occasionally squeeze in drawing and painting.
Why Do I Do It?
I love designing and creating to help, uplift, inspire and teach others. Art making isn't just a way to create income, but it's something my brain HAS TO DO!! It's a disease that I hope I will never find the cure for.
I Share Your Struggle!
I get it! No, really...when I started art journaling in 2011, I wasn't sure of how to begin, or where to even start. Luckily I stumbled upon Teesha Moore's video, "Fabric Journals- Part 1 of 4". It was like a light turned on. Since that time I've honed in to what works for me and what I enjoy the most. Don't beat yourself up or begin to panic that your first journals aren't as pretty as everyone else's. OF COURSE NOT...creative journaling is a personal journey for everyone. There is no right or wrong, but through making mistakes, that's the only way you'll learn your own way of creating what you love.
Hardest Part About Being a Creative Journalist?
For me, it's been trying to find commercial free graphics to alter to include in my own work, but recently I've wanted to provide an affordable resource for creative journalists to use in their own work. That's where Litterbrush has come into play.
I had an epiphany, to create a magazine for other creative journalists to use in their own work. One that is filled with papers, tags, envelopes, ephemera, journal prompts, washi tape strips, fussy-cut graphics, post-cards AND of course articles and tutorials that will be instructive and inspiring!
I hope you find something useful and inspirational!
